You’re already a product manager… you can define a roadmap and groom a backlog, among many other things. But did you know that to be truly effective, you also need to manage your manager? And your manager’s manager? And eventually the CEO and other executives?
Managing upwards is one of the critical “soft skills” that all product managers need to be successful in their role and in their career. Your ability to work with and for your manager affects your workload, your career opportunities, and your job satisfaction, among many other external impacts.
In this workshop, we’ll take a design thinking approach to people management. What is your job? What is your manager’s job? And what is your company’s goal? Given those inputs, we’ll talk about how you can best “manage upwards” and help everyone succeed. Learn the basics of reporting upwards, how to disagree and give feedback to your manager, and how to handle difficult meetings with executives and other important stakeholders.
Who is it for?
This workshop is for all product managers and product owners who want to improve their working relationship with their manager, and/or are struggling in executive and stakeholder meetings. Even if you have a great relationship with your manager, and glide effortlessly through high-pressure meetings, you will learn a few tactics for streamlining your work, and benefit from thinking more deeply about your role in the workplace.
The workshop will be especially helpful for people early in their career, or who haven’t previously thought about managing upwards. However, the content is applicable to anyone who has a manager; even people who are already managers!
- Being a manager is very different than being a product manager. Your manager has many different tasks and goals that you might not even be aware of.
- Executives and other stakeholders in your company have their own goals and motivations. You can support and take part in their successes if you know where to focus and invest, and communicate those decisions clearly.
- Your manager doesn’t have the bandwidth to follow your every move. You must optimize your communication so the most important information gets through to your manager.
- Your manager isn’t the only person who you serve within your company. Your ability to keep your manager informed, but work seamlessly across departments and with various levels of management is key to your reputation and career progression.
- Sometimes things go wrong and you have to escalate. If you can own the communication, the resolution, and the post-mortem well, you can set yourself apart as a high performer.

- What is my job? What is my manager’s job? What is my company’s job? Are they in alignment? How can I get them better aligned?
- How do I communicate with my manager today? How can I optimize it even more?
- Am I viewed as an owner by my manager and within my team or company? If so, how do I demonstrate that? If not, how can I start?
- What is something important that you’re uncomfortable discussing with your manager? How can you approach that discussion with fairness and confidence?
Individual Follow-up Coaching Option
To maximize the value of this course for your organization, we offer an additional follow-up coaching (60 minutes, remote) just for you or your team a couple of weeks after the course. That way, you get to ask all the questions that might have popped up once you tried implementing what you learned in this course. We are going to contact you to set the specific date for your individual follow-up.
The follow-up coaching is available for CHF 350 and includes 30 minutes of preparation for your specific questions or documents (sent upfront) and 60 minutes of remote coaching via video call for you or your entire product team.

Andrew is a veteran product manager and product leader with experience at Bay Area companies like Yelp, eBay, Prosper, and Silver Spring Networks. He has a degree in Product Design from Stanford University, and spent the first five years of his career as a digital product designer at various agencies. In 2016, Andrew moved from San Francisco to Hamburg to lead a team of product managers and designers in Yelp’s Hamburg office. As of January 2020 he is on sabbatical, and is looking forward to some travel and time with family.
